As one of the serial events of “Culture China”, “The Overseas Chinese Artists Invitational Exhibition” has been officially hosted by the He Xiangning Art Museum annually since 2020, and has become one of the major academic projects thereafter. He Xiangning is an outstanding female artist in modern Chinese history, and the museum named after her has always maintained a strong focus on overseas Chinese art as well as female art. “In Working: Women in Art Practice – The 4th Overseas Chinese Artists Invitational Exhibition” takes a close look at the overseas Chinese female artists and attempts to explore the diversity and possibilities in today’s social works.

The focus of this year’s exhibition is that, in a history of production going through agriculture, industry and intellect, being productive forces of labor, female artists across the ages have done contribution physically, emotionally and intellectually. By investigating their artistic creations, this exhibition takes the public on a journey to rethink the efforts of overseas Chinese women in the new era for social development, cultural exchange and intellectual innovation in the context of globalization.

The exhibition invites 16 female artists who have lived overseas for a long time or have long been traveling between China and the abroad, to present their art practice till now in a multidimensional way, ranging from video recording, artistic expression to spatial reconstruction. Some of the artists celebrate women in the times with delicate and sensitive emotions, some explore the meaning of housework with keywords such as repetition and superposition, and some imagine the future with a vision beyond gender. These works demonstrate the overseas Chinese women’s observation, reflection and feelings on individual, collective, world, history and society.

I am very please to announce that my video ” Everywhere and All at Once” will be screened at NCY Feminist Film Week at Anthology Film Archives in New York City on March 10, 2019

Program: Object Subject, curated by Maya Suess

For this program, a visual and auditory exploration of the tactile, the viewers will be invited as they enter the cinema to select an object to hold for the duration of the screening. We are material creatures who encounter the tangible world through our physical senses, and we get to know our environment and ourselves through tactile experiences. Objects help us contextualize ourselves in the world, they bring us together, they help us express thoughts and ideas, they define us. This program presents works by visual artists, performance artists, and filmmakers exploring ideas of family, community, self, and sexuality through the objects around them.

Group Exhibition – The Breadth of Distance

I am very glad to announce that I have a group exhibition. The Breadth of Distance, at L Space, Humber Galleries, Toronto

Exhibition: February 4, 2019 – April 5, 2019
Opening:  Wednesday, February 6th, 5-8pm
Curated by: Alize Zorlutuna
Address: Humber College, Lakeshore Campus L Building, 19 Colonel Samuel Smith Park Drive, Toronto, ON M8V 4B

we carry continents,
cross oceans,
traverse vast distances while still.

the scent of comfort,
is also longing.
what goes unsaid,
a kind of knowing.

how do elsewheres live in the body?

in dreams?
half-remembered tongues.
in what cannot be named.

Bringing together photography, video, installation, and sculpture, these artworks shift across geographies, cultural perspectives, and time. Considering grief, longing, care and resilience, they articulate how relationships to place, representation, and belief shape who we are and how we move in the present.

This exhibition asks us to reckon with how we came to be here on this land. Whether we are Indigenous, multi-generational settlers, or recent immigrants, our current moment demands we think through how we might build mutual understanding and empathy while recognizing our many differences.

Group Exhibition – Far and Near: the Distance(s) between Us, at Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Toronto

My group exhibition, Far and Near: the Distance(s) between Us, is held at  Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Museum of University of Toronto on Sept 6 – Oct 29, 2017

Far and Near: the Distance(s) between Us brings together several generations of Canadian artists of Chinese descent, offering perspectives onto the Chinese Canadian community’s historical and cultural evolutions and developments. The works included in the exhibition investigate overlooked narratives by exploring notions of distancing and being distanced in relation to race, identity, sexuality and their intertwining with Chinese Canadian history.

The idea of distance unfolds in multiple layers: in the geographic sense, as in going through a distance from point A to point B, like the construction process of the Canadian Pacific Railway; in the cultural sense, through the mainstream’s imposition of stereotypes, as in how the Chinese Canadian community has been culturally differentiated and essentialized; and in the context of the Chinese community itself, as in who is “Us”, and the distances between different groups of ethnic Chinese.

Exhibition Date:  Sept 6 – Oct 29, 2017
Opening: Wednesday, September 6, 2017
Address: Justina M. Barnicke Gallery,  7 Hart House Cir, Toronto, ON M5S 3H3
Curated by Henry Heng Lu

The call was attended by42 artists from Mainland China and living abroad, especially Europe and North America, and 57 different videos in animation; documental, video-performance and videoart were shown in 6 different venues in Mexico City.
