They est une installation vidéo à quatre chaînes qui emmène le public dans les mondes de quatre femmes pour examiner de près leur vie quotidienne ritualisée, leurs obsessions, leurs tiraillements et leur détermination à être ce qu’elles sont. Les quatre femmes sont différentes, mais se ressemblent: elles vivent des transitions difficiles, des relations ambivalentes et des désirs qui les troublent, tout en célébrant leur propre existence de manière subversive, et même presque méditative. Le titre de l’installation est dérivé du pronom neutre anglais they. Dans cette vidéo, they est à la fois singulier et pluriel, désignant les femmes comme des individus uniques qui sont pluriels, mais dont les corps ont été marqués autrement.

Dans ce vidéo à quatre perspectives, l’artiste présente le corps de la femme comme un endroit de transgression et de resistance socio-politique. En employant des gestes symboliques, un rythme poétique et des répétitions, Dong révèle une réflexion complexe sur la médiation des identités à travers les écrans les performances et sur la manière dont elles nous parviennent avec le temps. Cette installation vidéo multicanal s’inspire des traditions du cinéma et de la performance pour tenter de créer de nouveaux récits visuels qui permettent au public de faire directement l’expérience de la dimension temporelle du corps, tout en fournissant une clé pour comprendre le pouvoir corporel à l’ère numérique d’aujourd’hui.

The Centre d’exposition L’Imagier is pleased to present Trames narratives / Storylines, the very first exhibition presented in its new building.

The opening will be held on Friday, May 24th, 6 p.m., at Centre d’exposition L’Imagier, 9, Front St., Gatineau (Aylmer).

The inaugural exhibition of the new L’Imagier seeks to showcase a multiplicity of practices and perspectives by bringing together six curators: Katarzyna (Kasia) Basta, Marianne Breton, Paul Brunet, Marie-Hélène Leblanc, Stefan St-Laurent and Julie Tremble. Artists Chun Hua Catherine Dong, David Elliott, Kablusiak, Kim Kielhofner, Carl Trahan, Jennifer Lefort and Mélanie Myers present discourses, experiences and stories weaving different narrative layers. By promoting the sharing of artistic visions, knowledge and interests, the exhibition fosters dialogue.

Guided by the notion of narration, the curators present artists whose works testify to their genesis, the experience of the artist or the observation of society. The works of various artistic mediums – photography, drawing, collage, sculpture and performance – are highlighted both in their differences and in their common filiations. While some appear closer to reality, others appeal more freely to fiction. Blurring the boundaries between the real and the imaginary, the exhibition promotes a contact with a plurality of truths.

Le Centre d’exposition L’Imagier est heureux de vous présenter Trames narratives / Storylines, la toute première exposition présentée dans son nouvel espace.

Le vernissage se déroulera le vendredi 24 mai 2019, à 18 h, au Centre d’exposition L’Imagier situé au 9, rue Front, Gatineau (secteur Aylmer).

L’exposition inaugurale du nouveau Centre d’exposition L’Imagier cherche à mettre en valeur une multiplicité de pratiques et de points de vue en réunissant six commissaires : Katarzyna (Kasia) Basta, Marianne Breton, Paul Brunet, Marie-Hélène Leblanc, Stefan St-Laurent et Julie Tremble. Ceux-ci présentent les artistes Chun Hua Catherine Dong, David Elliott, Kablusiak, Kim Kielhofner, Carl Trahan, Jennifer Lefort et Mélanie Myers, qui offrent aux visiteurs des discours, des expériences, des récits tissant différentes couches narratives. En favorisant le partage de visions artistiques, de connaissances et d’intérêts, l’exposition se veut un lieu de dialogue.

Guidés par la notion de narration, les commissaires ont sélectionné des artistes dont les œuvres témoignent de leur genèse, de l’expérience de l’artiste ou de l’observation de la société. Les œuvres de diverses disciplines artistiques – la photographie, le dessin, le collage, la sculpture et la performance – sont mises en lumière tant dans leurs différences que leurs filiations communes. In conjunction with the exhibition, Are You My Mother?, Dunlop Art Gallery, in partnership with Neutral Ground Artist Run Centre is pleased to present a new performance artwork by Montreal-based artist Chun Hua Catherine Dong, exploring the passage of time and feelings of grief following the loss of her mother in 2016. Featuring Regina-based dance artist, Johanna Bundon.

Chun Hua Catherine Dong is a Chinese-born, Montreal-based visual artist working with performance, photography, and video. She received a MFA from Concordia University and a BFA from Emily Carr University Art & Design.

Workshop–Surrey Art Gallery

I am very pleased to announce that I will have a workshop with youth at  Surrey Art Gallery, BC,  as part of Art Together on April 3, 2018, presented by AgentC Project

This performance art workshop is designed for students who want to learn how to use performance to both challenge and change. This workshop combines a brief introduction of performance art, movements and gestures exercises, and improvisations, helping students to create live art images, actions and rituals, fostering new understanding of the body-based art in our everyday lives. Through this workshop, students will learn how to access and develop their powerful and creative imaginations in an engaging and fun way.  Students will also learn new approaches to art making, how to create various personas, and how to collaborate with their fellow performers to create a new form of art that will challenge traditional ideas of art and transcend the boundaries of nation, gender, and racial identity.

“A Fair Days’ Work” is a durational performance piece that explores relationship between time and labor in working environment. “Work” is often defined as paid actives links to the market. While paid work remain visible, the unpaid work in arts, as a phenomenon, remains unrecognized and undervalued. “A Fair Days’ Work” is not only a test of mental and physical endurance, but also a satire that echoes the condition of artistic labor in relation to capitalist economy and subsidy culture, providing a justification for the artists’ vulnerability.

Performance – Inverse Performance Art Festival

I am pleased to announce that I will be performing a new durations piece, ” The Warrior ” at Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery, in San Luis Obispo, California, as part of at Inverse Performance Art Festival 1:00pm – 3:30pm, September 29, 2017

“The Warrior” is a durational performance that explores how to use self-care, a new feminist strategy of resistance, to transform violent conflicts. Recent feminist discourse discusses to the potential power and radical nature of embracing self-care to explore our vulnerabilities because if “I matter, we matter, we are transforming what matters.” In this performance, I employ the similar strategy to create a liminal being by subverting my body to a site of contradiction and satire. The war is not inevitable. Conflicts can be diffused and transformed; arms can be laid down for good. Peace may often be elusive, but it is within our grasp which is both a gift and a task. For me, what the most important thing in this performance is to create some positive and sustainable gestures/actions that have capabilities to transform violence without depicting violence itself. Through satirizing the role of armed-force and juxtaposing the meditative gestures, this performance not only reveals a powerful sense of self and openness, but also turns the battle ground to a harmonious meditation space that cherishes human dignity, peace with justice, and shared well-being.

Performance – Experimental Action in Houston

I am pleased to announce that I will be performing a new durations piece, ” Lost Islands,” at Experimental Action in Houston on Feb 23, 2017 at 8:00pm

Experimental Action is a biennial, three day, innovative International performance art festival. The festival features a collection of groundbreaking International and non local performance artists along with Houston-based performance artists. Each of the three nights is hosted at a different Houston venue and consists of a series of engaging, participatory and experimental Performance Art works. Incoming performance artists speak at area universities and lead workshops during the days. We host a symposium featuring a panel discussion, created with the intention to process experiences from the festival and to facilitate critical dialogue about the work presented.

La Biennale de Quebec – Manif D’art 8

My work,  ” Husbands and I,” will be exhibited at La Biennale de Quebec in Feb 17 – May 14, 2017

Husbands and I is a social performance wherein I navigate my own relationship to Western culture through one-minute and one-day relationships with white men. I started the “Husbands and I” performance in 2009 in Vancouver, where I wore a traditional Chinese dress and asked white males on streets to have photo taken with me by suggesting them to be my husbands for a minute. I have had photos with 325 men. In 2010, I posted classified advertisements describing myself as “an exotic, compliant and artistic Asian girl looking for a white husband who would like to take me to his home to live with him for a day as his mail order bride,” and recorded videos of my experiences living for one day with each ad respondent.

Group Exhibition- What Remains at Gallery Gachet in Vancouver

My group exhibition will be held at Gallery Gachet in Vancouver Jan 13th – Mar 12th, 2017

What Remains is comprised of the work of four artists who contend with conditions of identity through unique and varied means. This multimedia exhibition incorporates dialogical performance highlighting resistance to a gendering and racializing gaze formed on Eurocentric constructions of identity politics. Sincere, experiential, embodied works from the following artists will be featured: Afuwa, Chun Hua Catherine Dong, Marbella Anne Carlos and Jordan Martin.

The artists’ performances relate to moments of their lived experience as they consider what remains after the performance —placeholders for future engagements with a gallery audience. The residue of performance includes video, photography, physical objects and other remnants —elements that can only linger as memory. This exhibition will focus on the importance of performance as process that decenters value constructs placed upon the art object. In this case, these processes are not concerned with success tied to a commercial market of production. The work presented is a culmination of the everyday experiences generously shared by the artists, held and supported by the gallery.
